Volunteer of the Month: Doug DiSandro

VIP’s Volunteer of the Month for November is Doug DiSandro, a partner at Saltz Mongeluzzi Bendesky who represents victims of catastrophic injuries. Over the past decade, Doug has consistently made time for pro bono matters as well.

Doug has spent his entire career representing plaintiffs in civil cases. His VIP clients are the sole exception. These clients, who are defendants in auto accidents and slip-and-falls, run the risk of losing their already-limited assets to a judgment against them. Doug’s representation, informed by his expertise as a plaintiff’s attorney, puts them at ease.

All I ask of my clients is their trust. It is very rewarding to be able to explain to someone that they don’t have to give me anything but that trust and in exchange I will help them navigate through what is a terrifying and unfamiliar process. My goal is to advocate for them and lift the burden off their shoulders.

Growing up in Philadelphia, Doug saw living testaments to the impact of quality legal representation. He recalls meeting clients of his father – himself a personal injury lawyer – and hearing their stories. “I didn’t know what it meant at the time, but I knew whatever my dad was doing, he was helping people who truly needed it.” Doug carries that inspiration with him in both his paid and pro bono cases.

So far, all of Doug’s VIP clients have walked away from their cases with a favorable result. But there is more to his pro bono work than getting good outcomes, as important as that is. “It’s not just about resolving a legal issue,” Doug explains. “It’s about showing clients that someone is in their corner, willing to fight for them when they feel like they are all alone and the odds are stacked against them.”
